Romantic castles and country-house hotels

The Torridon Hotel, Wester Ross
Best for: dramatic landscapes and Michelin-starred dining
Set beneath towering mountains on Scotland’s wild west coast, The Torridon is a five-star boutique Highland hotel in one of the most dramatic locations in the country.
With its own herd of Highland cows, a Michelin-starred restaurant, an exceptional whisky bar, the Torridon Inn next door and a full outdoor activity centre, this is a destination in its own right.
Spend days canoeing on Loch Torridon, scrambling gorges or simply soaking up the views, before returning to fireside drinks and outstanding food. It’s the Highlands’ answer to a spa retreat – combine a day on Loch Torridon with a tasting menu in the evening and you have one of the best stays in Scotland
If you’re looking for romantic getaways in Scotland that feel remote, indulgent and deeply relaxing, this next stay is hard to beat.

Neidpath Castle, Peebles
Best for: a fairytale castle stay
Ever dreamed of staying in a castle in Scotland? Neidpath Castle offers the chance to check into a spectacular luxury suite within a beautifully restored 12th-century tower house overlooking the River Tweed.
Your stay includes a four-poster bed, roaring fires, a roll-top bath and all the modern comforts you’d expect, with the unforgettable bonus of having the entire castle, including its ancient ramparts, completely to yourselves.
Queen Mary’s Chamber is far more than a hotel room. Queen Mary’s Chamber is one of the most unusual romantic stays you’ll find in Scotland.

Romantic cabins, treehouses and lochside hideaways

The Queen’s Hut, Aboyne
Best for: a classic Highland hideaway
Hidden in the heart of Royal Deeside, this beautifully positioned luxury log cabin sits on the edge of its own tree-lined loch, with views stretching towards the Cairngorm Mountains.
Whether you’re indulging in the deep copper bath, or lighting a fire beside the loch, this is a space made for switching off together.
A rambling woodland path leads from the cabin to a rather excellent country pub, and with Aberdeenshire, Deeside and Speyside all close by, The Queen’s Hut makes an ideal base for a romantic rural escape in Scotland.

The Birdwatcher’s Cabin, Golspie
Best for: seclusion & slow luxury on the North Coast 500
Tucked away on the shores of Loch Fleet near Dunrobin Castle, the Birdwatcher’s Cabin is a beautifully designed luxury hideaway that feels like a secret you almost want to keep to yourself.
This minimalist cabin is all about understated comfort. Inside, you’ll find a rainfall shower lined with local Caithness slate, soft neutral tones, cosy blankets and an incredibly comfortable bed, perfect for slow mornings and long, lazy lie-ins.
Located on the North Coast 500, it’s an ideal choice for couples seeking a peaceful and romantic cabin in Scotland, where the only decision is whether to pour another glass of wine or watch the light change over the loch.

Bracken Treehouse at Airdit, Fife
Best for: a grown-up treehouse stay
Set high above 30 acres of private woodland, Bracken Treehouse is a beautifully designed, adults-only hideaway offering a peaceful and indulgent escape in rural Fife, close to the coast.
The standout feature, and my favourite part, is the large outdoor bath on the deck, perfectly positioned for long, lazy soaks among the treetops.
Inside, the design is warm and modern, while the king-sized bed sits beneath a stargazing skylight, turning bedtime into an experience in itself. Between evenings in the outdoor bath and mornings waking up to the trees, this is romance done beautifully.

The Boathouses, Loch Tay
Best for: lochside romance
Perched right on the water’s edge, the Loch Tay Boathouses, Osprey, Oyster and Dipper, are stunning Scandinavian-style retreats designed for total escapism.
Hidden away on the lochside, this is romantic seclusion at its very best. Each boathouse comes with its own private beach, ideal for candlelit barbecues, early-morning swims or watching red squirrels wander past at breakfast.
Evenings are made for lighting candles, cooking delicious local produce (Aberfeldy’s butchers are excellent), pouring a glass of fizz and watching the ever-changing views across the loch.

The Hideaway Experience, outside Dundee
Best for: hot tubs & privacy

Each cabin feels like a miniature boutique hotel, complete with a spa-style bathroom, private sauna, wood-burning stove in the bedroom and an outdoor hot tub designed for complete privacy.
It’s romantic rural living at its finest, a place to disconnect from the world, soak under the stars and enjoy a truly indulgent couples’ escape in Scotland.

Culbin Edge, Moray Speyside
Best for: coast & whisky country – and that hot tub!
Overlooking the vast Culbin Forest as it stretches along the Moray Firth coastline, Culbin Edge is a luxurious romantic cabin with breathtaking views and a fabulous wood-fired hot tub.
Perfectly placed for exploring Moray’s stunning beaches or touring Speyside’s famous distilleries, this is also a wonderful spot to do absolutely nothing at all.
Inside, the cabin has a sleek retro feel, with cosy throws, thoughtful details and plush dressing gowns. All that’s left is to open the sliding doors, pour a glass of prosecco and sink into the hot tub.

Eagle Brae, Glen Affric
Best for: a classic Highland romantic getaway in Scotland
For couples seeking a truly romantic log cabin in the Scottish Highlands, Eagle Brae is hard to beat. This collection of beautifully crafted cedar cabins sits in one of the most spectacular locations in the country.
The Certhia cabin, designed especially for couples, comes complete with its own private sauna, perfect after a day exploring nearby Glen Affric, often described as Scotland’s most beautiful glen.
On-site experiences include kayaking, pony trekking, husky racing and wildlife adventures, but there’s just as much joy in staying put, glass in hand, wrapped in a blanket, soaking up the Highland views from your deck.

The Three Chimneys, Isle of Skye
Best for: foodie romantic getaways
The Three Chimneys is one of the world’s most celebrated destination restaurants, and next door, The House Over-By offers one of the most romantic boutique hotel experiences in Scotland.
Each suite features loch views, relaxed Scandinavian-inspired interiors and beautifully spacious bathrooms. Dinner is, of course, the highlight, with the iconic Skye, Land & Sea tasting menu showcasing exceptional local produce sourced within 20 miles of the restaurant.
From oysters at Carbost to scallops from Sconser, this is a romantic escape designed for couples who believe food is an essential part of travel.

A romantic city escape

Westside Woodshed, near Edinburgh
Best for: a city & countryside romantic getaway
Hidden among the trees just south of Edinburgh, the Westside Woodshed is an incredibly stylish Scandi-inspired log cabin for two, set within 3,000 acres of rolling hills in the Pentland Hills Regional Park.
Despite feeling wonderfully remote, Edinburgh’s restaurants, bars and culture are just 20 minutes away. From your doorstep, you can walk into the Pentlands for sweeping views across to the Forth Bridges.
Back at the cabin, open the patio doors, pour a gin and tonic and slip into the outdoor hot tub – bliss.
Honeymoon in Scotland
Scotland makes a wonderful honeymoon: dramatic scenery, empty beaches, castles and some of the best food in Britain, all within a few hours’ drive. The best honeymoons here combine two or three very different places rather than rushing between lots of them.
For a honeymoon, I’d choose the stays with the most sense of occasion: The Torridon for mountains and a tasting menu, The Three Chimneys on Skye for one of Scotland’s great meals, and Neidpath Castle for a night in a castle all to yourselves. The Hideaway Experience even has a lodge called The Honeymooners.
Fly into Edinburgh and out of Inverness or Glasgow to avoid doubling back. For more route ideas, see my Scotland road trips.
Scotland honeymoon tips
- Best time: May, June and September give long days and fewer crowds. Bring midge repellent from June to August.
- Book early: the most romantic stays, particularly the cabins with hot tubs, book up months ahead for summer.
- Allow for driving: Highland roads are slow and often single-track, so allow more time than your sat nav suggests. On the route above, the Loch Tay to Torridon day is the longest, at around four hours.
- Tell them it’s your honeymoon when you book. Many hotels add a small surprise.
Romantic winter and Valentine’s breaks in Scotland
Winter is one of the most romantic times to visit Scotland: shorter days, roaring fires, frosty mornings and, in the far north, the chance of the Northern Lights. The castle stays and cabins with wood-burners and hot tubs come into their own.
- For fires and four-posters: Neidpath Castle
- For a hot tub under winter stars: The Hideaway Experience, Culbin Edge or the Westside Woodshed
- For a fireside dram after a winter walk: The Torridon
Valentine’s weekend books up early, and many winter hotel deals exclude it, so book as soon as you can. For romance packages and winter offers, see my hotel deals in Scotland, updated every month.
Check winter availability and minimum stays when you book, as some self-catering stays require two or more nights at weekends.
