Veg box schemes in Scotland: where to get local veg delivered to your door

Here’s where to find a veg box in Scotland, region by region, from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Fife, Aberdeenshire and the Black Isle.

Veg box schemes in Scotland - the complete guide

A good veg box is the easiest way I know to eat what Scotland actually grows. Someone who farms nearby picks it, packs it and brings it to your door, and you cook whatever turns up. Some weeks that means a lot of kale. That is rather the point.

Scotland has more of these schemes than most people realise, from long-running organic farms with fleets of electric vans to one-acre market gardens with a waiting list. Most are run by the people who grow the veg, and most are organic or grown to organic principles.

This is my guide to all of the veg box schemes across Scotland, mapped by region, from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Fife, Aberdeenshire and the Black Isle.

Most schemes deliver weekly or fortnightly, and most let you pause for holidays or swap out things you do not eat. A few are CSAs, where you sign up for a season and take a share of whatever the farm harvests.

Locavore is the big one in Glasgow. It grows on its own certified organic farm at Barnhill in Renfrewshire and delivers across most of the central belt. If you would rather deal with a city greengrocer, there are two that do regular boxes.

Veg boxes in Edinburgh and the Lothians

Edinburgh is spoilt for choice. The city is backed by East Lothian, some of the best growing land in Scotland, and several of the farms there have been doing boxes for decades. East Coast Organics and Phantassie are the established names. Lauriston is a CSA inside the city itself, and The Free Company does boxes from its no-dig farm at Balerno.

Veg boxes in Inverness, the Black Isle and the Highlands

For somewhere with a short growing season, the area around Inverness is remarkably well served. Macleod Organics has been delivering since the late nineties, and there are three small organic growers within half an hour of the city. Where you live decides a lot. Knockfarrel only goes north of the Kessock Bridge, and the Natural Vegetable Company stays close to Inverness.

Veg box

Woodside Arran

Kildonan, Isle of Arran

A non-profit community farm at Kildonan with a market garden, rare breed pigs and free-range hens, running a summer and autumn CSA veg box with home delivery between Kildonan and Brodick, or collection from the farm. Pork and egg memberships too. Check the season’s dates before signing up.

How to get the most out of a veg box

Eat the delicate things first. Salad leaves, herbs, spinach and soft fruit go first, then the greens, and the roots, squash and cabbage will sit happily for a week or more. Plan the first couple of meals around whatever will not keep.

Be patient through the hungry gap in spring. Scottish fields have very little to give between March and May, and most schemes buy in to fill boxes then.

No veg box delivery in your area? Your best bet is a farmers market. There are good ones at Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Castle Douglas, and producer markets on Mull and Bute. They are all in my guide to farm shops and farmers markets in Scotland.

If you know of a scheme I have missed, please tell me.

Veg box schemes in Scotland: your questions answered

Can you get a veg box delivered anywhere in Scotland?

Not quite. The central belt, Fife, the Lothians, Aberdeen and the Inverness area are well covered, and Locavore and Bellfield Organics both deliver over large areas. The south west, Argyll and the islands have very little, and a farmers market is usually the better option there.

What is a CSA?

Community supported agriculture. Instead of ordering a box, you become a member of a farm for the season, usually paying up front, and take a share of whatever it harvests. Lauriston in Edinburgh and East Neuk Market Garden in Fife both work this way. It is a more direct relationship with the grower, and a bigger commitment.

Are Scottish veg boxes organic?

Most of the ones here are, either certified or grown to organic principles. The greengrocer schemes – Roots & Fruits, Zucchini, Aberdeen Fresh Veg and Swansons – buy in their produce, and only some of it is organic.

Is everything in a veg box grown in Scotland?

Not always. Most growers top up from other organic farms, especially in the hungry gap between March and May, and some bring in fruit such as citrus from further afield. If it matters to you, look at the box contents before ordering – most schemes publish them each week.

Which veg box deliveries cover Edinburgh?

East Coast Organics, Phantassie, The Free Company, Lauriston (by collection), Locavore, Grow Wild and Bellfield Organics all serve Edinburgh or parts of it. Check your postcode with each, as routes change.

Which veg box deliveries cover Glasgow?

Locavore is the main one, alongside greengrocer boxes from Roots & Fruits and Zucchini. Bellfield Organics delivers to the South Side and West End.

Before you sign up

Delivery areas change, small growers fill up, and some schemes pause over winter or through the hungry gap. Check your postcode on the scheme’s own website before you commit, and if a small grower has a waiting list, get on it anyway. Spaces do come up.
