The Three Chimneys and House Over By, Isle of Skye
There are few places in Scotland with a longer and more illustrious foodie history than The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye – but with a six-hour drive from Edinburgh or Glasgow and three hours to the closest airport, you need to make an effort for your dinner.
However, on arrival at this string of tiny whitewashed croft cottages perched out on the banks of Loch Dunvegan in one of the remotest areas of Skye your efforts are seriously rewarded. The rooms next door to the Three Chimneys in The House Over By are all suites with views over the loch, Scandinavian shabby-chic style and bathrooms large enough to live in. Book in for the whole shebang – it’s worth it.

Monachyle Mhor and Mhor 84, Perthshire
Best described as cool and quirky, along with being dog friendly, Monachyle Mhor has held a reputation as one of Scotland’s best hotels for decades. Leave the roaring traffic on the A84 behind and follow the long and winding lochside road to reach a beautifully pink boutique hotel overlooking Loch Voil and Loch Doine under towering Munros above.

Inver restaurant and bothies, Argyll
On the beautiful banks of Loch Fyne in Argyll is Inver, one of Scotland’s best restaurants with rooms. The only restaurant in Scotland with a green Michelin star, dinner at Inver is a 6-course tasting menu that takes you from the restaurant’s cottage garden, through this season’s delights to locally produced heritage meats such as local Loch Lomond blackface lamb.
Inver’s ‘bothies’ have super king-size beds and huge ensuite bathrooms, are chock full of Scottish design touches and have picture windows to take in the fabulosu views.

Ballintaggart Farm and the Grandtully Hotel, Perthshire
The Grandtully Hotel and Ballintaggart Farm are foodie boltholes in the heart of Perthshire on the banks of the famous River Tay. The Meikleour Arms Hotel, Perthshire
In the heart of eastern Perthshire (otherwise known as Cataran Country) is the wonderful boutique Meikleour Arms Hotel and restaurant. Built in 1820 as a coaching inn for those travelling from Edinburgh to Inverness, and then a fishing lodge, the Meikleor Arms Hotel now has 11 bedrooms in the main hotel, cottages in the stables and steading, and a lovely French-Scottish farm to fork restaurant, the hotel is a great spot from which to explore eastern Perthshire.

Portavadie, Loch Fyne
On Scotland’s west coast, the spectacular Loch Fyne stretches from the pretty town of Inveraray to the stunning Ostel Bay – and right out to sea. Whilst the western bank of the loch is much visited by those travelling to the popular Kintyre Peninsula and Islay and the southern Hebrides, the eastern bank of the loch is still mostly untouched by tourism.
Want to really get away from it all? Then head to the very edge of Loch Fyne and the Portavadie Marina and Spa, a marina resort with a quite unbelievable view on Argyll’s ‘Secret Coast’.
