When people think about food and drink in Scotland, one thing usually comes to mind – whisky. But there is much more to Scotland’s food and drink scene than distilleries and single malts.
From freshly shucked oysters on the west coast to Michelin-starred tasting menus, this is your guide to 5 of the best food and drink experiences in Scotland, beyond the dram.
1. Discover the best seafood along Scotland’s coast
Scotland’s coastline stretches for thousands of miles, and that makes it one of the best places to enjoy seafood in the world. Here are the best areas to explore for the freshest seafood, right off the boat.

Explore the Argyll Seafood Trail to discover the best local producers, seafood restaurants, and fishing communities along the west coast.
From the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar which serves up fresh seafood straight from the loch, to the Oban Seafood Hut (the green shack) a seafood shack on the Calmac ferry harbour hat serves scallops, langoustines, and crab claws.

Moray Firth
Home to what must be Scotland’s most famous soup, Cullen Skink, the recipe might be pretty simple (potato, onion, smoked haddock, bay leaves, chicken stock, cream and black pepper) but the title of Queen of Cullen Skink is still hotly contested annually in Cullen on the Moray Firth.
Try Cullen Skink at the Rockpool Cafe.
East Lothian and Berwickshire
Offering fresh lobster, crab, mussels and haddock caught daily, head to The Lobster Shack, North Berwick, or Ebbcarrs in St Abb’s for crab sandwiches.

Try Dunrobin Gin, distilled on the Dunrobin Castle Estate, the Isle of Harris Gin, infused with hand-harvested sugar kelp, The Botanist is brewed on Islay with 22 local botanicals, and Kirkjuvagr Gin is from Orkney and celebrates Norse heritage.

Scottish craft breweries
Breweries like Fyne Ales, Tempest Brewing, and Pilot produce everything from crisp lagers to experimental saisons. Many tasting rooms are located on farms or in converted barns—perfect for an afternoon session. Here are my favourites.
- Cromarty Brewing Co, Cromarty – family-run, hop-forward, coastal-inspired beers; crisp session ales alongside innovative IPAs and limited-edition releases.
