Scotland Do: the best tours in Scotland

Scotland is one of those places that gets under your skin. The problem? There’s so much of it to explore, and if you don’t have a car – or simply want someone else to do the driving while you press your nose against the window at Glencoe – a guided tour is the answer.

I’ve pulled together the best tours in Scotland across every type of trip, from one-day Highlands adventures and Isle of Skye small group tours, to whisky tastings, Outlander filming locations and Edinburgh ghost walks. Whatever brings you here, there’s a tour for it.

Here’s how to make the most of Scotland without getting lost on a single-track road. (Though honestly, that can be half the fun.)

Scottish Highlands tours from Edinburgh

The Highlands are the reason most people come to Scotland, and honestly, I don’t blame them. Glencoe alone is worth the trip.

If you’re based in Edinburgh and don’t have a car, a day tour is by far the easiest way to reach the mountains, glens and lochs that make this country so extraordinary.

Highlands tours tend to be long days – expect 12 hours on the road – but the scenery more than makes up for it.

Here are the best:

How to choose the right Scotland tour

A few things worth knowing before you book:

Group size matters. Small group minibus tours (usually 16 seats or fewer) can reach places the big coaches can’t. They’re also a much better experience – you get more interaction with your guide and more flexibility on the day.

Day tours are long. Edinburgh to the Highlands and back is a big day – expect to be out for 12 hours. If you’re going with children or anyone who doesn’t love long days on a coach, a multi-day tour based in the Highlands is a better shout.

Book early for summer. Small group tours and popular summer departures sell out weeks in advance, particularly Rabbies and Highland Explorer. Don’t leave it to the last minute.

Check cancellation policies. Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, but always double-check before you book.

Budget guide: Day tours typically start from around £55–£90. Multi-day tours from around £169–£250 per person.

Frequently asked questions

Which Scotland tour operators are the best? Rabbies and Timberbush Tours consistently receive the highest ratings for their Highlands and Isle of Skye tours. Both run small group departures with excellent guide commentary.

Are Loch Ness tours worth it? Yes – but make sure you pick one that includes time at Urquhart Castle and an optional Loch Ness cruise. Loch Ness on its own is a brief stop; it’s the journey through Glencoe and the Highlands that makes the day.

How many days do you need for the Isle of Skye? At least two to three. A single day is possible but you’ll be rushing. The Fairy Pools, the Quiraing and Portree each deserve time.

Do Scotland tours sell out? Yes. Small group tours and summer weekend departures regularly sell out weeks ahead. Book as early as you can.
